How does the Trail Haven Water Straw Filter work?
The Trail Haven Water Straw Filter uses a hollow fibre membrane to remove bacteria, parasites, and microplastics from natural water sources. Simply place the straw into any stream, river, or lake and drink directly — no pumping, no chemicals, no waiting. It filters down to 0.1 microns, removing 99.9999% of harmful bacteria.
How much water can it filter before it needs replacing?
Each Trail Haven Water Straw Filter is rated to filter up to 1,000 litres of water — that's enough for years of regular trail use. The filter does not expire if stored correctly. When flow rate slows down, simply backwash the straw by blowing air back through it to clear the membrane.
Is it safe to use in South African rivers and streams?
Yes! The filter is specifically suited to South African natural water sources including mountain streams, rivers, and dams. It removes bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, as well as protozoa like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Note: it does not filter heavy chemicals or salt water, so avoid industrial runoff sources.
How do I clean and maintain the filter straw?
After each use, blow air back through the mouthpiece to backwash and clear the membrane. Rinse with clean water when possible. Never freeze the filter as this can damage the membrane. Store in a dry, cool place between uses. With proper care your filter will last for hundreds of litres of clean water.
